Paradox - An apparent absurdity within which lies a deeper truth.  

Since the beginning of civilisation entertainers have earned a living making other people laugh: clowns players, fools, jesters, jugglers, storytellers, and magicians are all very old professions.

In medieval times the travelling players were not only a source of stories, laughter and music; they were also the bearers of news, often reading royal proclamations. The modern image of the court jester as a benign morris dancer is a long way from the court fool of earlier times, for fools  are always a paradox, seemingly stupid, he was the only person in the royal court with free speech, and through his satire and mockery of the king, actually acted as an advisor. If only modern politicians had the wisdom to listen to comedians! In Shakespeare’s plays the fool makes us laugh, but is often the wisest character in the play – in King Lear he has a major role.

The magician too has an interesting history, having roots in both the words of entertainment and that of the gambler and confidence trickster who used his skills to cheat through deception.
